Is well water safe if you have elevated radon at your home?

by Brent Wilk

1. Radon in Air vs. Radon in Water

Radon is a radioactive gas linked to Lung Cancer. It can enter your home from two main sources:

1️⃣ Soil gas (most common)

  • Radon moves from the soil through cracks in the foundation into the home.

  • This causes most high radon readings in homes.

2️⃣ Well water

  • Radon dissolves in groundwater.

  • When you use the water (shower, laundry, dishwasher), radon can be released into the indoor air.

Municipal (city) water rarely contains meaningful radon because it dissipates before reaching homes.

2. When Well Water Is a Problem

The U.S. EPA estimates:

  • 10,000 pCi/L radon in water → about 1 pCi/L added to indoor air

For comparison:

  • The United States Environmental Protection Agency recommends action if indoor air radon is 4 pCi/L or higher.

So if you have very high radon in well water, it can meaningfully raise indoor air levels.

3. Is Drinking the Water Dangerous?

Most risk comes from breathing radon released into the air, not drinking it.

Drinking radon-contaminated water has a much smaller risk, mainly linked to stomach cancers, but inhalation is the primary concern.

4. What to Do If You Have a Well

If your home tested high for radon:

  1. Test indoor air (first priority).

  2. Test well water for radon if:

    • The home uses a private well

    • Air radon is elevated but mitigation didn’t lower it enough

    • You suspect groundwater sources.

5. If Radon Is in Well Water

Two common treatment systems:

Aeration system (best)

  • Sprays water in a tank and vents radon outside

  • Removes 95–99% of radon

Granular activated carbon (GAC)

  • Uses carbon filters

  • Works for lower levels but can become radioactive over time.

Bottom line:

  • Elevated radon in a home is usually from soil, not well water.

  • But if you have well water, it’s worth testing because it can contribute to indoor radon levels.
